How Bitdefender Works

There are actually two pieces to Bitdefender (BD).

The first piece is the installation of the modules.  When you setup the BD integration, there is an installation package created called “Kaseya Connector Default”.  This package has the modules that will be installed when you initiate the installation from the Bitdefender module in the VSA.  You are welcome to modify this package so it only installs what you want it to.  (Most people keep the default, but you are more than welcome to change it.)  That’s all this does, it INSTALLS.

The second piece is the “Policy”.  Policies configure and apply the settings for each installed module.  You are going to have a default policy called “Default Servers – No Scan, No Firewall.”  This is the overall default policy we have set at the very top level, as required.  With this policy, the settings used are the least intrusive while still providing protection, as it is automatically assigned to every new machine added, unless there is an over-riding policy of your own.  You cannot edit this policy.  You will need to clone it so you can create your own.  Just navigate to Policies, check the box next to the Default Server policy, and click on the Clone button at the top.  The system will then open the new policy for your changes.  Change the name to whatever you’d like, then set the other desired settings.

Suggested settings:

– Notice Anti-Malware is turned off. That is done on purpose, again to not be intrusive on a machine.  All you need to do is, within your newly cloned policy, navigate to Antimalware->On-Access and check the box for “On-Access Scanning” to turn it on.

– The Power User module is handy for pausing active scanning on the machine itself and adding exceptions on the individual machine while you troubleshoot.  Its setting can be found under General->Settings, just choose and set a password.  To access the Power User option on the machine, right-click on the icon in the task tray and choose Power User.  You will be prompted for the password.  Once entered, you can control the settings on the machine itself.

– The Task Tray Icon setting is located under General->Notifications.  Uncheck the box for “Silent Mode” and choose your options.

Once you have modified the policy to your satisfaction, click on the Save button at the bottom. (FYI, you can make all your changes in each section and Save at the very end.  Switching between Policy options within the policy will not lose your settings.)

Now you need to apply the new policy to your machines.  On the left, navigate to “Network.”  Your company name should show up at the very top of the tree.  Just right-click on your company name and choose “Assign Policy”, then choose your policy and click on “Finish.”  The new policy will then trickle down the tree to any and all machines, both future and present.  Note this could take a while if you have many machines.

You can set individual policies for different companies and machines the same way.  Create your new policy, then right-click on any object, individual company, machine group, or machine and set the desired policy.

If you have already deployed Bitdefender to your machines, but wish to add/remove features, do the following:

– Locate the machine(s) in GravityZone and check the boxes

– Click on the Tasks icon at the top

– Choose Reconfigure Client

– Check the boxes for the items you want installed, and uncheck the boxes for the ones you don‘t like

– Click Save

Give the system a few minutes to make the changes.
